Culinary Institute
Carleton University, 2010

The culinary institute incorporates three main programmatic aspects: classrooms/kitchens for teaching, a restaurant for practice and a residence for visiting chefs. The basis for this design revolves around both programmatic and architectural elements being treated as parts of an orchestra; each as individuals essential to the greater whole. This begins with a rhythmic progression through a series of interconnected spaces, all tied to an expansive central core - that “orchestrates” movement throughout the building. From this space, architectural elements spill out through a variety of formal expressions. This approach attempts to create a building that is dynamic and suggestive of a certain musical quality; a spatial interpretation of the buildings‘ function.
