Pavilion: Into the Void
Collaborative design build,
Carleton University, 2009

This project challenged myself and five other students to design and build a temporary enclosure to entertain a number of guests throughout one evening. We had to consider a spatial arrangement conducive to a varying number of visitors to enjoy a small bite and drink - without ever overcrowding or feeling empty. Our project was developed on the basis of two theories: one, that void could simply be a volume that is defined, yet without specific program, and two, that a continuous gesture such as wrapping would simultaneously define a positive and negative. By physically extending the elements of the tree towards the ground, we recreated the spaces found higher up. This act of extending provided a definition for an existing void in relation to the tree. This extended space would be inhabited, providing an experience of the void.
