Soft Territories
Collaborative Studio, TU Berlin, 2010

In collaboration with ten other students in the studio, we explored five districts of the Banlieue of Paris, focusing on four areas of study in teams: Macadam, Transit, Green and Residential Typologies. This involved a comprehensive map exploration used to uncover potential hot spots for the entire area as well as gaps in transit networks and associated green spaces.
As a group we developed a manifesto as the basis for all proposals. This set of goals was highly influenced by the findings of the research phase, which was a result of an intensive site visit to the key districts. Once the areas in need of attention were established, we were able to regroup to resolve more specific proposals for each of the five areas.
For the case study on the Clichy East site, it was determined that in order to make better use of the large open spaces between towers, a public realm was to be defined. Initially this was done in a very bold strategy dividing the large corridor into a series of continuous offset squares. From here more subtle and specific moves were taken to create a pleasant pedestrian zone that addressed more of the human scale. This involved cutting and shifting buildings, programming and reprogramming, landscaping and differentiating surface materials. The particular design of the spaces created would take the project to the next level.
